LANDING@Neary Lagoon, Neary Lagoon Through a Different Lens, Part 2, with Joy Schendledecker

    June 10, 2023
    11:00 am - 1:00 pm

    Neary Lagoon
Harvey West Park, exact location TBA, Santa Cruz

LANDING presents the second iteration of Joy Schendledecker’s exploration of Neary Lagoon.

Where is the invisible smog of microplastics in and around
    the mini-watershed of Neary Lagoon?

How is this complex area of extractive legacies, essential infrastructure,
working-class labor, biodiversity, and human recreation
in play with sea level rise and petro-plastics pollution?

What does this landscape tell us about ourselves and possible paths through climate change adaptation?

In this walking workshop, learn about the histories of Neary Lagoon, municipal infrastructures, and petro-plastic pollution.

Play with portable digital microscopes and macro lenses for mobile phones to explore and document microplastics from this environment.

Meet at: Chestnut St. entrance to Neary Lagoon

Accessibility notes: Demonstration and speaking area will be fully accessible, on the flat area at the Chestnut Street entrance to Neary Lagoon, adjacent to Chestnut Street Park. We will walk approximately 1.5 miles on mixed paths of gravel, decking, and grass in the second half of the session. Workshop will be held in English. Bathrooms are nearby at Depot Park and the Bay Street entrance to Neary Lagoon. Paid parking lots and metered street parking are nearby.

This project is presented in comradeship with Martabel Wasserman’s project, Refocusing Ecology.
